Craig Lawton is a young aspiring conductor, who completed an undergraduate degree in Music from the University of Southampton in 2007. Craig continues to live and work in Southampton.
In April 2008, Craig succeeded Gregg Hollister as principal conductor of the Winchester Chamber Orchestra and in May will take the post of Organist and Choirmaster at Christ Church Freemantle. In addition, Craig conducts the Charity Symphony Orchestra and is assistant conductor to the City of Southampton Orchestra.
His work as a conductor has led him to highly praised performances with numerous ensembles and soloists. During his time at the University of Southampton, Craig was assistant conductor to the University Symphony Orchestra and Sinfonietta. During his final year Craig led the Concerto Orchestra in successful performances during the music department's student lunchtime concert series at the Turner Sims Concert Hall.
In 2005 Craig became the first person accepted as the assistant conductor to the City of Southampton Orchestra working alongside principal conductor Dr. John Traill. At University he studied conducting under Robin Browning and organ with Sarah Baldock. From 2003-2007 Craig was Director of Music at Peartree Church.
Having toured extensively in Europe as a percussionist, Craig also conducted the University Orchestra in performances in Bulgaria during their 2007 tour.
Over the past six years Craig has raised over £2,500 for local charities. Craig excels in inspiring passion and excitement in performance and is equally at home working with a mixture of ages and musical abilities in diverse ensembles. Recent notable performances have included Tchaikovsky's Fourth and Fifth Symphonies and the Poulenc Harpsichord concerto with Jane Chapman.
Away from conducting, Craig has performed as a percussionist with the Winchester Symphony and Chamber Orchestras' as well as the City of Southampton Orchestra. A keen arranger, Craig has orchestrated several pieces for the Pops Incorporated UK which has received performances in the UK and USA.
