The performance of the well-known and much loved “Peter and the Wolf” by Prokofiev was performed by Winchester Chamber orchestra on 7th February, supported by an animated and engaging narration by James McConnachie, as well as a multimedia presentation put together by local artist Margaret Sturton. Both of which were made possible by receipt of a grant from Winchester City Council. This combination of audio and visual stimulation successfully captured the minds of the young listeners for the 45 minute performance.
The concerts were followed by an opportunity for the children to try out instruments provided by Hampshire Music Service under the supervision of players from the orchestra. The inspiration and imagination brought to life in the children’s minds by the performance was clearly visible in the queues of children waiting to try out a variety of string, woodwind, percussion and brass instruments. The enthusiasm in even the youngest of children was contagious, with children as young as three or four years old feeling the huge sense of achievement of making a sound out of a clarinet or trumpet.
Feedback from parents.
"Just a quick note to say how much we enjoyed yesterday a.m. [My daughter] had listened to the music at a music group last year so it was especially fun for her."
"My little boy sat spell bound throughout...Winchester Chamber Orchestra you excelled yourselves and James McConnachie was the perfect narrator - the fab art work from Margaret Sturton just the icing on the cake."
"[He] loved it, you have definitely inspired him!"
"The boys made a bee line for the violins and went back 3 times to have another go."
