CHILDREN'S CONCERT, WINCHESTER DISCOVERY CENTRE, SAT 7TH MARCH 2020

We are grateful to James McConnachie who once again agreed to be our narrator for Peter and the Wolf.

Afterwards there was a chance for children to try out an instrument they fancied under the supervision of a member of the orchestra.  The child-sized instruments were kindly loaned for the occasion by Hampshire Music Service.

Sat 22nd June 2019 - Summer Concert (Holy Trinity Church, Winchester)

WCO celebrated midsummer in the lovely cool surroundings of Holy Trinity Church, Winchester.  The  programme began with Chanson de Nuit by Elgar, followed by Mendelssohn's Midsummer Night's Dream Overture plus, from the same work, the Nocturne, Intermezzo and the famous 'Wedding March'.  The second half opened with Schubert's Overture in the Italian style, and we rounded off the night with a performance of the "Clock" Symphony (no. 101) by Haydn.

Our children's concert this year saw WCO and friends performing a musical take on the classic tale of 'Alice in Wonderland'.  The piece, composed by Jacob Bride, was accompanied on the big screen by some wonderful original artwork by George Howlett.  Budding musicians as usual had the opportunity to try out out some child sized instruments afterwards, courtesy of Hampshire Music Service.

Children's Concert at Discovery Centre - Saturday 14th July 2018

Our annual children's concert on July 14th - a little later than usual due to the snow in spring - included the Three Bears Phantasy, written by Eric Coates and narrated by local writer and broadcaster, James McConnachie. As ever, it was great fun playing to such a lively audience!  The theme of ‘bears’ continued with three rousing verses of The Teddy Bears Picnic, and Haydn’s Toy Symphony, complete with toy trumpet and bird sounds.

The children were able to try out a range of child-sized instruments afterwards, at our popular ‘instrument experience’, courtesy of Hampshire Music Service.

Our 30th Anniversary concert

We were delighted to be playing to a packed church on the evening of our 30th anniversary concert, also celebrating ten years of Craig Lawton as our conductor.  Karla Powell's Strauss oboe concerto was mesmerising, and an incredible feat on one of the hottest nights of the year!
This has been our most succesful concert yet in terms of raising funds for charities and we were very happy that a sizeable contribution could be given to Key Changes music therapy charity.  See some photographs of us hard at work during the afternoon rehearsal here.

March 2018
St Barnabas Family Concert

Our inaugural concert at St Barnabas was very well received by a lively audience!  Maria took time out from the viola section to introduce the pieces, and led some of the youngest around the room on a train journey during Copland's 'Railway Ballad'.  Good fun was had by all and we hope it will not be the last performance in our host church!
