Bizet - Symphony in C Brahms - Violin Concerto, Soloist Laura Rickard Laura Rickard's hometown is Romsey. She has been a featured soloist on BBC Radio 3, Classic FM, and NBC. She regularly appears with orchestras across the UK; recent highlights include performances at the Royal Festival Hall and the Purcell Room. |

January 2023 - Evening concert with clarinet soloist
Mendelssohn - Overture "Son & Stranger"
Weber - Clarinet concerto No.2 in Eb with Soloist Alison Hughes Beethoven - Symphony No.2 The concert was in support of Winchester Hospice. Net proceeds from ticket sales were shared with the Hospice resulting in a donation of nearly £500. 157 tickets were sold for the evening concert and 80 for the mini-matinée. The concert was conducted by Matthew Lloyd-Wilson due to Craig Lawton's indisposition. James MacConnachie narrated the mini-matinée which was a selection of excerpts from the evening programme. |

Fauré - Masques et Bergamasques
Saint-Saëns - Cello Concerto No.1 Interval Schumann - Symphony No. 1 ("Spring") Our Cello soloist was Lionel Handy. Lionel was principal cellist of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields for ten years with whom he recorded and toured extensively throughout USA and Europe. He was then teaching at Winchester College. |
Children's Concert, SATURDAY 12th MArch 2022
A 45 minute programme with excerpts from various classical works featuring birds or birdsong, accompanied by illustrations from George Howlett and narration from James McConnachie.
The programme included: Respighi - The Birds Delius - On hearing the First cuckoo in Spring Haydn - Symphony 83 'the hen' Tchaikovsky - Swan Lake ‘dance of the little swans’ Saint-Saëns - Carnival of the animals ‘the swan' Following each performance members of the orchestra's string section were be on hand to enable children to try out violins and cellos which were provided by Hampshire Music Service. (Due to the covid pandemic situation we weren't unable to showcase wind and brass instruments.) |

Saturday December 11th 2021 - Christmas Concert
At St. Paul's Church, Winchester Christmas Carols in Orchestral arrangements Sleigh Ride - Leroy Anderson Jingle Bells - Kenneth Gaw Excerpts from the Nutracker Suite - Tchaikovsky Noël (Fantasy on Carols) - Judith Bailey Conductor: Craig Lawton Leader: Jackie Drew (Sarah Noble was indisposed) This was the first concert in the newly refurbished St Paul's church. A short double performance was performed with fewer audience members (100) per performance and spacing between seats as advised for the suppression of covid. About 160 tickets were sold. |
CHILDREN'S CONCERT, WINCHESTER DISCOVERY CENTRE, SAT 7TH MARCH 2020
We are grateful to James McConnachie who once again agreed to be our narrator for Peter and the Wolf.
Afterwards there was a chance for children to try out an instrument they fancied under the supervision of a member of the orchestra. The child-sized instruments were kindly loaned for the occasion by Hampshire Music Service. |
NEW YEAR CONCERT - HOLY TRINITY CHURCH, 12TH JANUARY 2020
Sat 22nd June 2019 - Summer Concert (Holy Trinity Church, Winchester)
WCO celebrated midsummer in the lovely cool surroundings of Holy Trinity Church, Winchester. The programme began with Chanson de Nuit by Elgar, followed by Mendelssohn's Midsummer Night's Dream Overture plus, from the same work, the Nocturne, Intermezzo and the famous 'Wedding March'. The second half opened with Schubert's Overture in the Italian style, and we rounded off the night with a performance of the "Clock" Symphony (no. 101) by Haydn.

Children's Concert, Winchester Discovery Centre, 16th March 2019
Our children's concert this year saw WCO and friends performing a musical take on the classic tale of 'Alice in Wonderland'. The piece, composed by Jacob Bride, was accompanied on the big screen by some wonderful original artwork by George Howlett. Budding musicians as usual had the opportunity to try out out some child sized instruments afterwards, courtesy of Hampshire Music Service.
New Year Concert - Holy Trinity Church, 12th January 2019
Programme: Weber Preciosa Overture Elgar Chanson de Matin Respighi The Birds Suite Beethoven Symphony No. 1 WCO welcomed in the New Year in a new venue for us, Holy Trinity in Winchester. We were delighted to be received by an almost packed church! The concert helped to raise funds for Southampton-based charity 'Gift of Sight'. |
Children's Concert at Discovery Centre - Saturday 14th July 2018
Our annual children's concert on July 14th - a little later than usual due to the snow in spring - included the Three Bears Phantasy, written by Eric Coates and narrated by local writer and broadcaster, James McConnachie. As ever, it was great fun playing to such a lively audience! The theme of ‘bears’ continued with three rousing verses of The Teddy Bears Picnic, and Haydn’s Toy Symphony, complete with toy trumpet and bird sounds.
The children were able to try out a range of child-sized instruments afterwards, at our popular ‘instrument experience’, courtesy of Hampshire Music Service. |

We had a sell-out concert this year and raised £700 for Solent Mind, the charity we were supporting this year. Freddie Hand, our wonderful soloist, who stepping in at the last minute when Timothy Ellis was unavailable, gave a wonderful performance of Saint-Saens Piano Concerto.

February 2015 Children's ConcertThe performance of the well-known and much loved “Peter and the Wolf” by Prokofiev was performed by Winchester Chamber orchestra on 7th February, supported by an animated and engaging narration by James McConnachie, as well as a multimedia presentation put together by local artist Margaret Sturton.
